XMAS APPEAL 2025
3 NEW CLASSROOMS FOR 3 NURSERY SCHOOLS IN MALAWI
Thank you for raising over £13,000 for the building of three classrooms at three nursery schools operated since 2011 by Starfish Malawi in the Salima district of Malawi
The three nursery schools in Malawi that we are supporting this year are named after the villages they serve, Jonasi, Moyo and Kundai and currently have 130 children each, so 390 in total.
Each nursery school takes children aged between 3 and 5 yrs and have a good record of preparing them for primary education. However, space is increasingly tight resulting in about 40 children learning under trees when weather allows. With the funds raised by the Appeal, Starfish Malawi will be able to build a classroom at each of the nurseries to take 40 children, 120 in total.
Each classroom will cost £2500 and, as the appeal has exceeded this level, we will also be able to pay for 2 new kitchens and some desks and chairs which are made locally. All the materials required have been itemised and costed and the work will be carried out by local builders who built the original buildings. The school staff are paid by the Starfish Malawi charity, who will also manage the building projects.
Salima is near Lake Malawi and is rural with basic agriculture but low food security due to recurring droughts and floods. Improved irrigation is slowly being established by the government. The three villages have a total population of about 12,000, who mostly live on about $2 a day.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT
